Budleigh Reserves win without easing out of first gear. THE excellent start that Budleigh Reserves have made to the new season continued last Saturday with a comprehensive victory over Wellington at Greenway Lane. With the lush green surface and the bright sunshine throughout, conditions were ideal for football but with five changes being made from the usual line-up it made for more of a workmanlike performance in which, to be fair, the side rarely needed to step out of first gear! Australian Daniel Ricciardo has been crowned as British F3 International champion after a storming drive in the opening race of last weekend's double-header in Portugal. The Carlin Motorsport driver followed invitation class drivers Jules Bianchi and Bianchi's team-mate Esteban Gutierrez across the line in the opening round in the Algarve. But the 20-year-old took maximum points because he was the leading British-registered runner home and it sealed the title for him.

Sam Schlaefli had the best chance to open the scoring when his close range effort came back off the cross bar and there were also reasonable opportunities served up for Scott Howarth and Sam Bir

That was the way that Sam Bird ironically summarised his F3 Euro Series weekend, during Sunday's press conference, after the young Briton came third in Sunday's race. "I don't know whether to cry or laugh", he added with a pained smile. "I managed to get Esteban off the start and was on Brendon's tail, when suddenly my engine started to rev with no power, coming out of the second corner.

BUDLEIGH welcomed the Senior one champion's Alphington to Greenway Lane and thought they got off to the perfect start when Scott Howarth turned his marker and fired home with a sweet left foot volley in the first minute, only for the goal to be disallowed. The Robins' had five players making debuts and all acquitted themselves well. With Dan Reynolds and Sam Bird adding real pace to the side while the team looked solid at the back with Paul Rowsell and Rich Higham gelling well.
